Nilay

Nilay is a project that we spent close to five months on just because of how particular our client was with respect to getting the design exactly right. Our back and forth at the time of design saw us go through a myriad of colour schemes and concepts until the entire family was satisfied with the delicate balance we had found with neutrals and colour.

The double wall was the feature element for the living spaces and working out a design for the double wall eventually came down to an in depth material study to understand what would be sophisticated and elegant enough when used in that heavy volume and at the same time wouldn’t get lost or create visual clutter in the living room. When we finally settled on a textured grey concrete finish, we started on the elements that were to be placed on the wall itself. After we decided to go with graphic lines, the rest of the living room fell into place in symphony with the wall.

The kitchen was a special room in this house given that the family expected to spend a fair amount of time there cooking and preparing meals together. We gave them a multifunctional island to serve the requirements and then pulled in as much fun and whimsy as we could when we put together the colour palette for the space. What we ended up with was a kitchen that is loved and used by grandparents, parents and children alike!

Another special feature of this house was the movie room. For this, the family wanted to move away from traditional movie room design which is dark and heavy, and they wanted a multifunctional room that they could double as a guest room, if required. We all know why movie rooms are usually dark and heavy, one aspect is for optimised acoustics and the other is to enhance the experience of watching a movie. To solve for acoustics, we provided wall panels, but we kept the cladding light, so that the room would have an upbeat and airy feel.
